Bless Our Hearts
My great-grandfather said he voted for the man, not the party. He meant it as a fact about himself, not about elections, and that character is the subject: how decent people in the South I love came to defend things they'd never do themselves, where the line is, and what it takes to be the same person in every room. Voting is just where it shows. Nobody says bless our hearts. That's the point.
