Hour 4:
Publishing Your Web Pages

This hour gives you the basic knowledge you need to utilize and choose between the most common distribution methods for Web pages. The most obvious avenue for publishing Web pages is, of course, the Internet. Yet you may want to limit the distribution of your pages to a local intranet within your organization instead of making them available to the general public. You may also choose to distribute your Web pages on CD-ROMs, floppy disks, Zip disks, or the new DVD-ROM disks.

Fast Track to Getting Your Web Pages Online

  1. Use The List to comparison-shop for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who can host your Web pages, or check out the free Web hosting services listed at Yahoo!

  2. Download CuteFTP file transfer software, and ask your Web hosting service how to transfer files from your computer to their Web server using FTP.

  3. Want a snazzy domain name like "FredsFreshFish.com" or "CharityHouse.org"? Find out if a domain name is available or already in use, then ask your Web hosting service to help you apply for one.

(No HTML tags or example pages are covered in Hour 4.)

Key Quote from This Hour

"Even though Netscape Navigator can send files to any Web server on the Internet, specialized FTP programs such as WS_FTP or CuteFTP offer much more control for managing your Web pages. For example, Navigator doesn't give you any way to delete an old Web page that you want to get rid of, or change the name of a Web page on the server computer. You'll definitely want a specialized FTP program to maintain your Web site."
