Meteor Defense

2002–2005 · Windows

A Windows window titled Meteor Defense. Grey meteors fall through a black starfield toward a horizon of city skylines and two stepped pyramids on pale ground. Missiles rise to meet them, one bursting in an orange explosion, and a white crosshair sits at centre. The score 247 is centred at the top.

A Missile Command–inspired defense game. You’re at the bottom of the screen, meteors fall from above, you shoot them down before they hit the ground. Written in C++ for Windows as a demo for Beginning Game Programming. The interesting part was keeping dozens of simultaneous projectile trajectories moving smoothly through a double-buffered GDI blit, which in 2004 still meant watching every frame you drew.

Download it (a standalone Windows executable from 2004, so no installer — 32-bit, and it may well still run).
